He had his 3rd 听写 on Thursday.. I usually didn’t have much time to prepare him beforehand as he has Spelling on Wednesdays.. I usually prepare him 1 or 2 days in advanced..
Last Wednesday, when I was trying to practise with him, there were 4 phrases which he couldn’t remember.. He kept getting the tones wrong.. He looked very tired at about 9.30pm so I gave up and sent him to bed.. The next morning, I tried to remind him about the number to remember for each phrase so he could memorize as much as he could cos he couldn’t seem to be able to differentiate between the 4 tones.. I tested him in the car and reminded him to check and practise again before the Chinese lesson.. I even gave a shoutout of exasperation to my friends!
Got a pleasant surprise today! He managed to get 100/100!
I’m pretty proud of him for getting full marks this time! However, I am telling myself to prepare him for 听写 earlier in future.. And of cos, it’s ok to not get full marks for 听写..
As for his English Spelling, he has been doing well and getting full marks for his Spellings so far.. There were 2 unseen words for Spelling 3 and 4 and he only didn’t manage to spell ‘shed’ correctly.. Good job, son!!
I’ve been diligently preparing Jovan for his 1st spelling for the year for the past 2 weeks.. I test him verbally and also got him to write down on a book.. He would sometimes write letters in their mirror image.. I would correct him and retest him and he would soon get them correct..
Practice at home…
I tested him a few times last week but he came back on Friday telling me he did not have any spelling..
Today, when I picked him up from the ccc, he excitedly announced that he had spelling and he had spelt all the words correctly.. but I got a shock when I saw what he had written!
Teacher Sabrina didn’t mark the spelling and I don’t blame her for not marking.. She wrote a note asking if Jovan always wrote in mirror images.. I managed to speak to her and I shared that he would write correctly when I practised with him at home.. She said she would monitor.. sigh.. I think I have to be even more diligent and get him to practise every night until the next spelling.. I’m hoping that he can correct this soon and will not be diagnosed with dyslexia..
Wish me luck!
Didn’t prepare early enough again. Sigh.. This time there were 5 words.. I was ranting on FB about how teaching him to spelling made me lose my patience.. It’s really challenging but I’m trying to tell myself that it’s just spelling! There’s always spellcheck! Hee.. Even if he failed, it won’t do us much harm, right? I just need to manage my expectations…
Anyway, he did get full marks! Although the teacher was kind enough to ignore the mirror images of the letters ‘a’ and ‘s’..
Note to self: I really need to start preparing him earlier!
The consequences of insufficient preparation. I totally forgot about his spelling until Wednesday! We only had 2 days to prepare.
It was quite expected that he wouldn’t do well and even after a last minute revision in the morning, he wasn’t ready..
And the consequence is this:
Sigh.. the teacher was quite encouraging though.. guess we really need to start preparing him earlier although it seems like he’s going to miss his next spelling which is scheduled on Teachers’ Day.. need to check with Teacher Sabrina about this..
Our hard work has paid off! Full marks for his 1st spelling!
Of cos we should praise him! Although the teacher in me will actually ask him to rewrite the number ‘2’ and the letter ‘y’.. hee..
Ok, this is a good start! With hard work (ours), I’m sure he can do well in the future spelling tests..
The hubby got the boy to practise writing the words to be tested..
Yes, its finally here.. my boy’s 1st spelling list!
Heard from some friends that their kids started having spelling tests from K1..
For the first half of the year, we didn’t have to worry about it but the day has come! We’ve to start teaching my boy to spell!
Good luck to us!
